The company has been dancing on St. Marks Tower-in Macau China, not Venice, Italy. The Venetian in Macau has a replica that is quite beautiful and has served as a challenging and interesting site. The dance was accompanied by a violin quartet performing the music of Vivaldi for the opening ceremony of their Carnevale Festival and the company stayed on to perform another 20 short shows over the last two weeks. The Portuguese food, the jet foil ride from Hong Kong, the colonial architecture and the underlying culture of China that permeates this island off the mainland, all have made the experience a unique touring experience.

“Amelia Rudolph absolutely beautiful in Trisha Brown’s Man Walking. Breathtaking, heart-rate jumping and empathy generating exhilaration.” -tweeted by Kristy Edmunds, Executive & Artistic Director, Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA

“Trisha Brown is among the top most influential choreographers of the 20th/21st century whose groundbreaking experiments in the 70s pushed the definition and understanding of what dance is. Among her most famous works are “Roof Piece” (1971) and “Man Walking Down the Side of a Building” (1970) both of which put dance on architecture in public space. Her movement style was one of the first to ask dancers to move with release and naturalness on the concert stage. Both the idea of working in public space and that of released movement are central to how I think about my own work and seeing her dances in the 80s stimulated my imagination as a mover and dance maker. The inspiration that got me dancing on buildings was born from my experience as a climber, however in the context of post modern dance in America, it can be seen as a flowering of Trisha’s idea-that dance can take place on a vertical stage and in public space. Last week I was honored to perform “(Wo)Man Walking Down the Side of a Building” for UCLA’s major retrospective of Brown’s work. I worked closely with Diane Madden, associate artistic director of TBDC to re-create the piece true to Brown’s original intention. The experience was unforgettable. When I performed the piece, (which I did three times), it felt like I was casting a spell and was part of it. The piece takes place in silence and involves “simply” walking down the building. Each slight weight shift becomes monumental. My goal was to have it look like a person just walking, albeit in slow motion and on a building. After Friday’s show, I partook in a panel hosted by Kristy Edmunds, UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance Artistic Director and was joined by choreographers Lionel Popkin and Simone Forti as well as Trisha Brown dancer Laurel Tentindo. To be part of honoring dance history this way has been one of the most profoundly inspiring dance experiences I have ever had.” – Ameila

We’re busy gearing up for our July home season in San Francisco. Partnering with the Fort Mason Center, a 55,000 sq ft waterfront pavilion, BANDALOOP will premiere a brand new work, “Harboring”. Along with collaborators Jack Carpenter (art director), Todd Laby (set designer), Jim French (lighting), and Dana Leong and Gideo Freudmann (music), BANDALOOP founder/artistic director Amelia Rudolph will realize a engrossing, unconventional dance performance.

The work will respond to the transitional place Ft. Mason is and was, employing vertical, floor-based and aerial site-reactive dance to draw the viewer into an immersive experience. Using both an outdoor site and the interior of the vast pavilion as a three-dimensional canvas, “Harboring” will use dynamic rigging systems, the dancers’ bodies, and interactive set pieces to engage the architecture of the spaces.

The event will disrupt traditional performance style by asking the audience to invest in it through participation: members will pass through the spaces as a group to experience different sites, mingle and talk with each other at intervals, contribute memories and discuss dreams through various portals.

SAVE THE DATES!
July 18, 19, 20 & 21, 2013

Once known as the San Francisco Port of Embarkation, Ft. Mason is situated between a vast ocean and a bustling urban landscape. With a military past and a cultural present, Ft. Mason has witnessed countless transitions, both physical and metaphorical. “Harboring” will springboard off images of ancestry, the ocean, travel, rope craft, floating, harboring and anchoring, as well as the intimate juxtaposition of the social world of the city, and the retraining of order in urban spaces. http://www.fortmason.org/

“What a great few days at APAP Conference. We met some new connections, deepened others and took in ideas from panel discussions. I spoke on an inspiring panel called Integrative Art Through Free Public Performance along side presenters, funders and artists as we shared ideas about the value and meaning of performing in public space. Among other things I talked about the universality of the enjoyment of weightlessness and our dreams that bare this out and how, as an audience at a BANDALOOP show, the group senses itself as a community sharing the vicarious feeling of weightlessness watching us. I also shared thoughts about where civic life and performance merge asking what if we consider dance as a utility, like water and electricity, a common good, how would that change things.” - Amelia Rudolph, Founder/Artistic Director

Cliff Wood, Executive Director, Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy

2012 arrived with a storm of new evocative public art happening globally and in marriage with the tide of technology. This session provides examples of how constituency involvement, social medium voice, and new partnerships are possible and measurable in moving art and audiences from the proscenium out to a more public sphere. It responds to the provocative statement “Audiences don’t come to see you. They come to see themselves.”

Through public partnership we can move the call and response to a new level and find results that are palpable. Moving your audiences and moving your art to the public sphere will further engage the expansion of art out from beneath the proscenium archway, in fact expanding the archway itself beyond the traditional theater. This panel seeks to de-mystify the risk for both the Artist and the Presenter alike.
